Document Summary

Only holds information for about a fraction of a second. Sensory memory capacity can be large, but short. Four components: central executive, episodic buffer, phonological loop, and visuospatial sketchpad. Forgetting ebbinghaus(cid:495) work: taught us that we forget fast and this forgetting will level off over time (i. e. forgetting curve) We should focus on processes rather than memory stores. Shallow versus deep processing and how they affect remembering. Encoding specificity principle: being able to retrieve information depends on how well things match the context in which you learn things. You are at a restaurant looking at a menu and saw the following items: hot dogs, fries, burgers, cupcakes, sandwiches, tacos and donuts. Your friend shows up a minute later and asks what"s on the menu. Which items will you remember best from the menu: hot dogs. Primacy effects; because the friend showed up a minute later, the recency effects would be removed! The limit of short-term memory is 30 seconds.
