Strong ai the appropriately programmed computer really is a mind, in the sense that it can be said to understand, learn and have other cognitive states. Searle"s chinese box an argument intended to show conclusively that it is impossible for digital computers to understand language or to think. Problem in the chinese box, the computer is me and in other computer programs, they have do not understand more than i do. Two systems that pass the turing test, but only one that understands anything. Someone who believes in strong ai, the computer understands the questions and the scripts they are based on. Searle: i understand nothing, so the computer must understand nothing. Well, you may not understand chinese, but the system as a whole does.
