Response to challenges or opportunities that are important to our goals. Only lasts for seconds/minutes (different from moods, which are longer last) Appraisals, physiological responses, expressive behavior, subjective feelings, action tendencies (fast and interlinked steps) Interpretation of the situation in-relation to our current goals (construal) Automatic appraisal: consistency with our goals and general feeling of pleasant and unpleasant. Deliberative appraisal: thoughtful consideration, about causes and consequences, what we should do, etc. (more specific emotions, e. g. fear, anger, pride ) Influences our decisions, actions, to whether approach or not (help achieving our goals) Evolutionary adaptive benefits in response to threats and opportunities. Supporting idea: universality of emotions (cross culture and time) Facilitate behavior (emotions are tied to physical responses) and communication (e. g. alerting others in case of danger, or to scare off enemies) Also observed universality cross species, especially in primates. Universality: they can be observed by everyone (even blind people) People from different culture recognize the faces with different emotions.
