Prisoner could be watched at any time: so learns to self-regulate behavior. Self presentation: our attempt to control the impressions others have of us. Our social life is like putting on a play. You"re not always on stage; there are backstage moments and areas where you"re able to step out of your role momentarily; when you"re preparing to play your role (eg. talking to your friend about preparing for a job interview) Allows person to tolerate and recover from the irritations and stresses of public interaction: "good fences make good neighbors"
