Edward snowden: former nsa employee, released documentation on the massive spying on citizes worldwide by the five eyes colab . Ties in with discussions about other forms of surveillance: closed circuit video surveillance. The average british citizen is on camera 70 times per day! Comparisons to the panopticon: does the government have too much power, proposed by a philosopher jeremy bentham, as the population grew, prison size increases. At one point, it would be impossible to monitor prisoners: proposal: cells are arranged in a circle around a guard tower. The guard can look at any prisoner at any given time. Prisoner knows he could be watched at any moment this. Self-presentation: our attempt to control the impressions others have of us. Goffman"s metaphor of acting in a play: character, costume, props: referred to backstage phenomena, we are not always concerned about our impressions to our world we coordinate and talk to others, etc.
