PSYC 215 Lecture 22: PSYC 215 Lecture 22
Document Summary
Much of what we take as real and important is impacted by our culture. The concept of money; we just take them for what they are. Handshakes; feels real and natural but it"s particular to a culture. Days of the week; in our culture normal people work on tuesdays but not saturdays; they feel distinctly different because of the way we interact with the calendar in our culture. People are motivated to achieve mutual understanding or "shared reality" with others in order to. Perceive themselves and their environments as stable, predictable, meaningful, and potentially controllable. Seeing the world the same way gives us a feeling of control in seeing the world. The individual"s psychology is shaped through engagement with and participation in the culture. Language, political system, media, educational/caretaking practices, norms and values. Goals and behavior, scripted interactions, self-concept and evaluation, concepts, procedural knowledge. Culture provides us with a set of ideas and ways to think about them.
