Week 1 Lecture 4: Anatomy of the Brain
Review Structures:
- Sulcus goes up in inferior frontal gyrus
o Anterior ascending sulcus (of the lateral fissure)
o Horizontal ramus (branch)
- Forms triangle: Pars Triangularis
o Pars opercularis
- Area 4 and 6:
o Agranular
o Betz cells
- Area44: in pars opercularis:
- Area  ad : roa’s area
o Area 45: a lot of layer 4
- If stimulates the language zone: area 44 -> speech arrest: the patient stops talking
o Patiet a’t talk eause you have iterfered the oral ativity of this area,
disorganizing the normal activity of this area.
- When stimulate area 4 and 6 facial area:
o Vocalize: They make certain sounds
o And speech arrest
- Gray matter all around: functional cerebral cortex:
o There are different kinds of layers and cells -> cytoarchitecture
- White matter: Three categories
o Cortex going down to spinal cord: Betz neurons: very long axons (projections)
o Cortex to cortex: association fibers (fasciculi)
Arcuate fasciculus(association) : layer 3 frontal to temporal (associations)
Superior longitudinal faciculus (association): links parietal to frontal
(bidirectionals)
First branch goes from superioral parietal lobule to frontal lobe
Second branch goes from supramarginal gyrus ( part of inferioral
parietal lobule) to frontal lobe
o Supramarginal gyrus has its own axon: come and go to
specific area at frontal lobe
Third branch goes from angular gyrus ( part of inferioral parietal
lobule) to frontal lobe
o Angular gyrus has its own axon that goes to specific area at
frontal lobe
Inferior longitudinal faciculus: links occipital to temporal (bidirectional)
Middle longitudinal faciculus: links parietal to temporal (bidirectional)
o Connections from left to right: Commissural pathway
- Pathway: some of the neurons from one region talk to the other region
- Betz cells are cortical neurons that go to subcortical structure
