PSYC 311 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Amobarbital, Middle Temporal Gyrus, Etomidate
Document Summary
Psyc311: lecture 14: memory, a little speech, and iap: This is a problem because it suggests there may be something wrong in both sides of the mesial temporal structures. As you can imagine, removing these structures unilaterally could therefore another patient h. m (global amnesia) if the other hemisphere isn"t functioning correctly. In other words, the side of the brain that will not be resected should be able to sustain enough memory function so they can lead a reasonable life. Intra-carotid anaesthetic procedure (esam procedure, sodium amytal procedure): It was introduced by wada and rasmussen at the mni in the 1950s. It is now referred to as esam because the drug used is called etomidate, and sam stands for speech and memory. This drug causes anesthesia of one hemisphere by the injection of etomidate via the internal carotid artery. This allows you to put the entire hemisphere to sleep, and assess the functions of the remaining hemisphere.
