PSYC 311 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Ideomotor Phenomenon, Apraxia, White Matter
Document Summary
Liepmann (1900) apraxia is a problem w action but not due to paralysis or lack of comprehension it is a higher level motor problem de ned ideational apraxia and ideomotor apraxia. Ideomotor apraxia failure to coordinate the muscles to create an action for communication i. e. wave goodbye, salute. Liepmann: its a disconnection bw the idea and the action (so "ideomotor") example of russian soldier in hospital that "waved" at nurse but got ignored damage to left supermarginal gyrus and underlying white matter. Verbal command is heard via auditory cortex (heschl"s gyrus) Command is understood in wernick"s area (auditory association cortex) Command is sent to motor association cortex (ba 6) via arcuate fasciculus. Then sent to primary motor cortex (ba 4) to carry out command w muscles visual association cortex. Some patients have: right hemiplegia (paralysis of right side) and ideomotor apraxia of left side of body often have broca"s aphasia or at least some speech problems.
