Study on addiction: quantitative trait loci mapping of three loci controlling morphine preference using inbred mouse strains. The best way to test this (behaviourally) is to get a mouse to bar press directly for a drug. The problem with this approach is that it is hard to do; you have to implant catheters to insert drugs a(cid:374)d it is hard to keep (cid:272)atheters fro(cid:373) (cid:271)lo(cid:272)kage. Most people use a (cid:862)t(cid:449)o (cid:271)ottle (cid:272)hoi(cid:272)e(cid:863) (cid:373)ethod. You put the drug in water and see if they drink it. If (cid:373)orphi(cid:374)e is put i(cid:374)to (cid:449)ater a(cid:374)d it is the (cid:373)ouse"s o(cid:374)l(cid:455) (cid:449)ater sour(cid:272)e, the(cid:455) (cid:449)ill dri(cid:374)k it regardless of how much they like the drug. But if given two water bottles, and they persist in drinking the drug water, it shows that they like the drug. People try to encourage drinking of the drug water by making it a little sweeter (add saccharine) because morphine tastes bitter.
