Lo1: what is the significance of pain: the significance of pain goes far beyond the disruption it produces. It is also heavily influenced by the context: ex: sympathetic arousal, as it occurs in response to vigorous sports, seems to diminish pain sensitivity. In contrast, stress and psychological distress may aggravate the experience of pain. In contrast, resilience appears to be protective against catastrophizing pain, as these individuals are able to bounce back from moments of intense pain by experiencing positive emotions. Interestingly, those who typically react to pain by catastrophizing are also more likely to attend to and estimate greater pain from behaviors displayed by others: this evidence suggests that pain catastrophizing has both social and psychobiological underpinnings. Measuring pain: one barrier to the treatment of pain is the difficulty people have describing it objectively. It is the neurosignature then, and not the nerve impulses that give rise to pain and can explain phenomena like phantom limb pain.
