Abstract values of justice versus negative feelings acquired. People with neutral words and you see how long it takes people to decide about the words and the pairings. Then you pair words that fit the prejudice the person has. Measure in nanoseconds how fast they are. When you put opposite words and the prejudice, you get an interesting. You cannot control the answers you have (unlike when you are asked response specific questions) There is debate on whether it is measuring the real you or not: on the surface it seems like it is measuring the real you because its measuring in nanoseconds. The belief - it is publicly and normatively inappropriate to present preferences to certain races: with the iat, you are not getting the persons conscious efforts to not show preferences, therefore you get the real attitude.
