Lecturer"s research serves as a constant remidner of the historically privileged position we, as mainstream canadians, nd ourselves in unaware of the impact of centuries of colonization continues to this day . 2008, canadian gov"t of cially apologized for its infamous residential schools, where many aboriginal students, living in substandard conditions, were victims of physical and emotional abuse. Residential schools are one way that internal colonization was enforced on aboriginal peoples (an attempt to take the indian out of them ) - over 150 000 children separated from their families. Perpetrator groups: view an apology as resolution and closure for past historical harm. For perpetrators, an apology is the end. Victimized groups: view an apology as signaling the beginning of a series of actions to mend past historical harm for victims, an apology is only the beginning of a healing process.
