Second layer (motivated agent: we learn to category and rank things, including ourselves among others. Start comparing with others and becoming concerned about judgements: grade school age and developing self conscious, personal goals and accomplishment, competency. Sociometer theory: internal representation of how much we feel accepted. Self-determination theory: healthy functioning is not pre-occupied by self esteem; behaving according to true self and not contingent self. Comes with our overall achievement in life. Only a by-product in certain domains: correlate with extroversion (social dominance-assertive and confident, may associate with some disinhibition problems, e. g. bullies in teenagers. But the initiation may go in a wrong direction (e. g. drink earlier) Maybe we should teach self control instead of self esteem in teenage years. Insight from justin bieber"s story (probably npd) Age related: teenagers tend to be more rebellious. Role related: less regard of consequences; engage in impulsive and exploitative behaviors.
