How we react when we hear about trait measures thinking between- persons (comparing to other people), when you stop and consider as within-person (conditional on setting) Cross role variation in big 5 personality traits (sheldon, 2005) Rated big 5 traits displayed in different roles to see how much behavior varies based on our role or setting: Result: 80% of variance on trait dimensions was across roles. Extraversion: people most extroverted with friends and family, moderate at work and least at school. Neuroticism: most neurotic at school and work, least with family and friends. Agreeableness: most agreeable at work and with friends, moderate at school and least agreeable with family. Conscientiousness: highest at work, then school then least with friends and family.
