PSYC 333 Lecture 13: Week13 - Empathy
Document Summary
Drive to identify another person"s emotions and thoughts and responding to these with appropriate emotion. 3 components of empathy (zaki and ochsner): experience sharing: affective empathy, shared self-other representations, emotional contagion , mentalizing: cognitive empathy, perspective taking, tom , prosocial concern: empathic motivation, sympathy, empathic concern , emotion/experience sharing. Imitation starts very early (sticking out tongue, laughing, repeating word, etc. ) Simulation theory: we understand another"s behaviour by recreating the mental processes in ourselves (to simulate their experience to understand them) *during this imitation, we engage in overlapping neural systems to feel what others feel. *this overlapping between your neural system and other"s neural system = neural resonance. Perception-action model: observing someone in emotional state activates this state in observer. Ideomotor framework: common representational format for action/perception that facilitates imitation: mentalizing. Ex: theory of mind = deliberate attempt to reason about others" mental states. Reading the mind in the eyes test: determine what emotions each picture with human eyes convey.
