Document Summary

Public opinion polls show steady decline in negative evaluations of minority groups after wwii. Rodney king african american that was beaten by la officers. Michael brown had been involved in a convenience store robbery, was stopped by an officer for other reasons and this officer recognized him and shot him (12 bullets) It depends on who is asking and what is asked (mcconahay et al 1981) Three main approaches to understanding how stereotyping and prejudicial beliefs arise: categorization and impression formation, social shared beliefs about different groups and individuals. Start with category-based, theory driven, top down processing. We categorize people based on salient features ( the big 3 ) If the self is involved, more bottom-up processes are engaged. If the self is not involved, we continue with top-bottom processing. Stereotype consistent information will tend to be preferred and stereotype inconsistent information will tend to be ignored.
