In 1968 walter mischel wrote a review summarizing personality research on the question of consistency. He says there is a low correlation between self report measures nad predicting future behaviours. This posed a fundamental challenge to personality psych. Mischel observed the cross situational consistency is low at . 16. But while general cross situational cosnsitency between traits and behavior is low and not predicative, peoples" specific responses to specific situations were quite predictable. His approach is similar to bam and allen, who recommended more idiographic approach, studying specifics of individual and that not all traits will be applicable to all people in all situations. This highlights the idea that different people construe situations differently and we bring our prior history. Mischels" approach focuses on specifics of individual. Mischel is looking for regularities that these two people will do. The take home from the challenge was that we need to get rid of this random error and variability in behavior.
