PSYC 342 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Insulin Resistance, Leptin, Neuroglycopenia
Document Summary
Lecture 22 - eating behaviours ii: chronological hormonal variations. > or = 25 is overweight, > or = 30 is obese. Clinically, it is characterized as a condition with excess body fat. Worldwide, over 1 billion adults are overweight and at least 400 million of these are obese. High dietary restrain (yo-yo eating behaviours)/high disinhibition/high susceptibility to hunger behaviours are all associated with excess adiposity and/or obesity. Increased overeating and eating rate are risk factors for obesity: socio-cultural correlates. Ready availability and low cost of energy dense, nutrient-poor foods and drinks. U. s. per capita soft-drink consumption has increased by ~500% in the past 50 years. Decrease in energy expenditure based on a change in lifestyle. High peripheral-central concentrations of leptin in obese individuals, but lower central- peripheral leptin ratio (i. e. leptin dysfunction) Leptin corresponds to the amount of adipose tissue in an organism. Leptin is supposed to have an anorexigenic effect.
