Registration and enrollment
o Prof has no power over registration, if you’re having trouble registering you have to
email Julia Marussi and she will help
o There are prerequisites: PSYC 304 (child development) and PSYC 337 (abnormal
psychology)
Prof doesn’t care if you don’t have the pre-requisites, it is still possible to do
well in the class without these pre-requisite courses
If you’re U2 and haven’t taken PSYC 304 then you should take it Fall 2018 and
take this course the Winter after, prof teaches 304 in Fall and designed it to
be taken first

o Sixth edition is required, not an earlier one. This talks about DSM V and the earlier
ones talk about DSM IV

o When we move past methods we will start by
Defining the disorder: what is it? How do we diagnose and measure it?
Epidemiology: how common is it, and how many people would be expected
to have this? How does problem vary? Who is it more common for?
Theories of etiology and maintenance: what causes this problem and what
keeps it going?
Prevention and treatment: how can we help, what do we know about what
works to make this better?
What is abnormal behavior in youth?
o How do we know if something is abnormal? We need to understand normal
development in order to understand atypical development
o Why is developmental psychopathology a public concern?
o Abnormal: yes or no? (game)
