Longitudinal studies which measure # of years in poverty find associations to differential patterns in stress hormones, brain development, etc. Living in poverty found to correlate to high stress hormones and allostatic load, which impairs critical parts of your brains development. Appalachia is an extremely poor neighbourhood in the us with generations of poverty. Showed video of kids who are living in a small house with 12 people, barely afford food, mother was hooked on drugs, the 2 year old is getting pepsi in their bottle. Found that poverty leads to iq differences. Farah keeps track of how many years the individual lives in poverty and measures diff in stress and brain impairment. Brain functioning in terms of working memory, executive function, language abilities.
