PSYC 471 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Pretty Smart, Behaviorism
Document Summary
Four reasons why we praise kids: create bond, you like them, you value what they do, motivate, encourage a child to pursue something, keep trying and put in some effort, protect. Two examples of praise: richard after holy child basketball game in 5th grade, occurrence that made him feel motivated, energized, confident, none of the problems in basketball applied to prof. Some important issues: determining the motivational impact of praise is a complex question which depends on how the praise is interpreted, type of relationship, type of praise, age, gender, cultural background, public nature. If teacher praise is not part of a systematic reinforcement effort, what function does it serve: 5% of teacher communications can be classified as praise, 10% of teacher communications can be classified as criticism. Didn"t give it close in time necessarily. Was not specific for a level of performance. Praise one kid for a bad drawing and not praise someone with a better drawing.
