PSYC 532 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Diminishing Returns, Elon Musk, Artificial General Intelligence
Document Summary
Psyc 532: lecture 21 new trends in cognitive science lecture. Hypothetical event related to the development of artificial general intelligence. Could result in an intelligence explosion where machines could design successive generations of more powerful machines, which could get out of human"s control. Beyond that point event become unpredictable and even unfathomable via human intelligence. Convergence of disciplines created this idea slide 3. Human intellect has grown over the course of evolution, but slowly (green curve) Machine intelligence got a late start, but very rapid increase in intellectual power. There will come a point at which machine intelligence could surpass human intelligence, that point is called the singularity. Notion of the singularity comes from mathematics functions that do not behave properly, ie cannot compute the derivative, at some point eg inverse function (y=1/x) slide 6. In the region where x=0 the function is badly behaved ie becomes unpredictable. Alan turing suggesting a machine by shuffling 0,1 could simulate any algorithm.
