Us infant mortality is very high once babies move beyond time spent in the hospital. Due to inequality of poor vs wealthy mothers. There is a wide gap that starts occurring because some mothers do not have access to healthcare. Exogenous cause of death that are related to social problems. Will not have to know how to calc. Life table is thing to measure life expectancy. Compute asdr for an actual population for year t. Apply rates to hypothetical birth cohort of 10, 0000 babies born in year t. Take 100 000 babies and see if they experience these death rates. As the cohort ages some babies will die. Eventually you will be left with no people. Information from their experiences is used to calculate life expectancy. Demographers look at age spec life tables called model life tables. These will tell you that a population will have low mortality rates. Real data they will be deviant from the norm.
