Cohens research focuses mostly on gangs and subcultures and strain theory (status frustration) Ethnic or ratial subcultures, goth kids, commicon, star trekkies, youtube video subcultures, all don"t totally reject middle class standards. Vocabularies of motive subcultures secret language to go unnoticed by the mainstream culture subcultural justifications and excuses for their behaviour and their used to neutralize their deviant activities. Believed that juvenile gang membership is the product of lower socioeconomic classes core culture. Unlike strain theory, miller wasnt saying that it was social structures, but there was something in the lower class culture, something about lower class people that made them more likely to be deviant. These lower class people had core concerns were conducive to deviance. The idea is that these cultures have different values.
