Aging and dementia double stigma: mental health and older adults. The presentation will be done without a powerpoint. The powerpoint will be available afterwards as the presenter forgot her usb key. Life expectancy is getting longer so there will be an increase of people getting diagnosed with mental illness and dealing with the challenges of being an older adult. Additionally, many older adults get diagnosed with mental illness later in life such as depression, or other things that have gone undiagnosed for years but due to frequent hospital visits are now being diagnosed. As you increase in age, alzheimers and dementia become more common as well, including things such as parkinsons. About 80% of people in nursing homes right now have behavioural problems associated with dementia. Delerium and delusional disorders are common as well. Suicide prevalence in men over the age of 80 is super high. Mental health and older adults is very challenging.
