Experimentation is the interest in something that is deliberately manipulated. Issues raised by the results of experimental designs are more pertinent. Kinds of issues we"re looking at are relevant across designs. Instrumentation: same as maturation but instead of dealing with the subject, it deals with the observer. If you select members of an experimental group on the basis of an extreme performance it is likely their performance will change over time with or without an experimental effect. Where you have an extreme score it is likely the score is produced both by whatever you are trying to measure and by random factors. To what degree of confidence can i conclude the stimulus produces the outcome. The mean is the phenomenon that arises if a variable is extreme on its first measurement but closer to the mean on average on its second measurement.
