Ethnic & racial identities are primary (i. e. basic) form of social identity. Trumps all other forms of social identity (e. g. class, gender) Cant account for people whoa attach little importance to ethnic/ racial identities. Salience to groups & individuals across different contexts. Not the most basic and important to individuals. Some will strongly identify and some will not care too much. The ethnic and racial categories change a lot overtime. Early adult hood: consciousness about race and ethnicity comes to the floor. Salience changes based on context you are in. Answer: fundamental needs for small-scale, face-to-face communities of meaningful interaction. It can drive individuals to kill individuals that are outsiders.
