Salience to groups & individuals across different contexts. Not the most basic and important to individuals. Some will strongly identify and some will not care too much. The ethnic and racial categories change a lot overtime. Early adult hood: consciousness about race and ethnicity comes to the floor. Salience changes based on context you are in. Answer: fundamental needs for small-scale, face-to-face communities of meaningful interaction. It can drive individuals to kill individuals that are outsiders.
