Definitions: reproducing the family- part of human activity both material and social that is concerned with the process of caring for the present and future labor force- includes the domestic provision of food, labor, shelter, home production. Meaning: necessary daily grind, expression of love or caring, seen as requiring no skills- last 1800s became devalued, form of discipline, tool for self-care, unwelcome task preceding reward. Coming off of womens liberation movement- the problem that has no name, not getting recognition for work. Material/economic: production moved outside home, increasing importance of male wage (dependence on men"s earnings, technological advances: household appliances more accessible- role of producer consumer. Made labor less visible, physical, less valued. Ideological (housework=woman: separate spheres, cult of domesticity. The rise of women"s employment (and the dual income family) Mothers" wages = 41% of total family earnings. 29% of wives earn more than their husbands.
