Lecture 1/2 sociology of the family: the foundations - In the sense in north america, we have pluralistic families. The days of just sensing the nuclear family is the only family that day is over. An institution is a recognized realm of social life. It is organized in terms of norms that regulate our behaviour. Family is important because: primary source of meaningful relationships from birth until death, primary source of intimacy and need fulfillment for the individual throughout their life. Universal social institution (albeit taking many diverse forms). Ways in which language of family is invoked in the media, advertisements e(cid:454): joh(cid:374)so(cid:374) ba(cid:374)k: (cid:862)we"ll t(cid:396)eat (cid:455)ou like fa(cid:373)il(cid:455). (cid:863) If some business says they will treat you like family, they will treat you well and respect you: treat you in a special way, trust is very important, you are going to belong to something, safe place.
