De nitions of legal or illegal drugs usually depend less on its chemical properties and more on surrounding economic, social & political factors. We de ne drugs based on how serious its impact is. Rather than motivated by how serious, destructive these drugs are, a lot of criminalization due to discrimination - how particular drugs are related to particular groups. Govt tried to criminalize & control/repress normative behaviour in certain populations. Nicotine - we"re moving in that direction. Social factors shape alcohol use & abuse in at least 2 ways: We "learn" to use alcohol: by in uencing the odds that a person will learn to use alcohol to cope w/ stress, by in uencing the opportunities a person has to use alcohol for any reason.
