Document Summary

Sociology of gender: week 9 gender and health. Clinical and social researchers have seldom explored whether health differences may not be either biological or social, but a combination of the two. The two fields compete for resources and attention. This clouds our understanding of gender and health. Social processes create, maintain, or exacerbate underlying biological health differences. E. g. abortion politics (most illustrated) pregnancy factor to health, reason for mortality rate lower than men in places throughout world is due to reduced birth risks access to abortion directly affects women"s health. Measurements of patterns of health related to sex and gender: mortality rate: measure of the number of deaths in a particular population per unit of time, morbidity rate: the amount of disease or illness in a population. Clear patterns of gender differences in mortality and morbidity: women have higher morbidity rates but live longer than men; men have lower morbidity rates and don"t live as long as women.
