Document Summary

Sociology of gender: week 6 sexuality: sexuality i. Hook-ups: sexual events that occur outside of an exclusive relationship, often without a prearranged date, involving varying degrees of interest in a relationship, that may or may not involve oral sex and intercourse. Ambiguous definition; doesn"t have to involve sex (could just make out) Double standard: men and women are evaluated and treated differently for having done or said the same thing. Sexual double standards have progressed significantly over the last several decades. Hook-ups have also replaced dating/courtship as form of mating. Old rituals came directly out of wwii (lets have dates!) Conservatives: argue damaging to women, best to leave sex to marriage. Changes in sexuality gone too far; losing our morality. Feminists: focus of sexual assault/harassment; frequent in culture. Only because gender changes have not progressed enough. Some support culture for enablement of female (sexual) agency (at least, to some extent). Would see sex workers as exercising agency (not oppressed)
