Document Summary
Sociology of gender: week 5 men and gender based movements: men and feminism i & ii. Primary goal is gender equality in the public sphere, won through legal changes. John locke was a major proponent focused on right to private property without/beyond the jurisdiction of state intervention or control. Mary wollstonecraft (prime liberal feminist) took locke"s ideas and applied them to women in a vindication of the rights of women". Liberal feminism takes liberal ideas and applies them to women women were thought to be irrational at time and incapable of making decisions in public sphere. Women were to be liberated by way of their equal access to money, education, money, employment equality, legal say, etc. This limitation to the public sphere meant that inequalities such as domestic violence were only restricted so women could continue functioning in society as equal members (i. e. in the workplace sexual harassment) Focuses too much on women becoming like men.
