Document Summary
Week 1 social construction of gender: socialization (iii) Socialization: the lifelong process by which we learn our culture, develop our sense of self, and become functioning members of society. The learning of values, norms, and beliefs of our culture. Gender socialization: the process by which individuals learn the cultural behaviour of femininity or masculinity that is associated with the biological sex of male or female. Intimately related to social constructionism: e. g. blue vs. pink. What we"re taught to believe changes with cultural/social factors. Colour is socially constructed when certain colours are associated with certain ideas, things, or groups of people. E. g. blue/pink used to be pink for boys (stronger) and blue for girls (delicate and dainty), became reversed. Agents of socialization: the people, groups, and social institutions that provide the information needed for children to become fully functioning members of society. The family: the most significant; responsible for shaping personality, emerging identity, and initial values about gender.
