Worldwide, indigenous peoples have experienced colonization, cultural oppression, forced assimilation, and absorption into a global economy with little regard for their autonomy and wellbeing. 2006 census: 1. 17 million, or 3. 8% (aboriginal, m tis, inuit) 615 first nations bands, 2284 reserves, 53 inuit communities. Beginning in the 16th century, research shows mental and social problems. Despite these challenges though, many communities have done well. Researchers responsible for development of health policies agree on a long list of determinants that influence health. Circumstances, environments, current structures that re seen as barriers in the continuum/maintenance of health. Proximal (behaviors, physical environments, employment, income, education, food insecurity) Intermediate (health care systems, educational systems, community infrastructure, cultural continuity) 6. 6 times national rate of death by injuries and poisoning. Anyone whose identity is undermined by radical, personal or cultural change is put at special risk to suicide . Youth (more at risk) who are living through moments of dramatic change.
