Montesquieu is an advocate of some negative resistance power for women. Uzbek hires eunichs to be in charge of his wives. Uzbek is a despot, but when you look at the letter to the harem you compare and contrast to the narrative of uzbek"s enlightenment. He cannot control the fact that he is a control freak and obsessed with controlling his women. The letters from/to the seraglio: counterpoint to. Uzbek never suspected that roxanna was the wife who was unfaithful to him, but she had a lover. She writes a letter to uzbek saying that this is her revenge, he thought that he was controlling her but he wasn"t. Killing herself frees her from his control. Uzbek is having sex with his wife. Overarching theme of the novel: despotism/absolute rule. Montesquieu is trying to say there is such a thing of enlightened despotism as well enlightened despotism as well.
