Apec 1997: canada"s battle of seattle, protested the summit, became a scandal. We live in a society where there are certain frameworks that we are asked to be put into. It is also a system of oppression that interacts with capitalism and neoliberalism. Society as a struggle between the oppressors and the oppressed: to say that you are neutral is to take the side of the oppressor, power relies on people being actively neutral and foregoing judgment. Another model divides us up into 4 different kinds of people: based on stratfor model, how to effectively get your ideas across, problem is with the radicals, opportunists: care about money, realists: understand the world as it is. If an idealist stays an idealist that"s fine: overcoming fear and isolation is a big step, find other people who share an idea and build on it. Ngos: often funded, affective social change happens autonomous from that. Social justice organizing: seen as an exception.
