Sex: refers to biological distinctions such as the chromosomal, hormonal, or physical differences between male and females. In our society we perceive there to be two sexes male and female. Gender: is a culturally constructed form of identity that consists of the roles people are expected to place because of their sex. Why do we do this: eg. What you should wear/dress, how to act in public, etc Gender roles: activities and jobs that are considered appropriate for each sex - things like jobs (nurses can only be girls) and activities (ballet). Some societies have more rigid gender constructs and roles than others. Gender constructs and roles are also fluid and can vary over time. Margaret mead was an american anthropologist; she lived from 1901-1979.
