ANTHROP 2F03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Travesti, Enculturation
Document Summary
Sex: the observable physical characteristics that distinguish between two kinds of human beings. Genitalia is the most obvious physical characteristic of sex. Gender: the culturally constructed beliefs, behaviours and roles that are considered to be appro- priate for each sex or otherwise related to sex difference. It is a mode of differentiation and classification. Performative; something that you do rather than something that you have or are (points to practices that create and reproduce meaning) Understandings, processes, subjectivities and practices that are not necessarily generated or tied to reproductive organs. A cultural construct is the idea that the characteristics people associate with categories including gender, death and illness are all culturally defined. Sit on the fence between sex and gender; they are considered to be males through their genitals (sex) and women through their behaviour (gender) Travesti"s try to perform or act within the guidelines set for women ex. style of dress; form fitting clothes, wearing dresses/skirts, long hair, makeup.
