The debate between the intellectualists and the symbolists. Emphasizes the intellectual and cognitive aspects of culture: pre-eminence of mind over body. The core of culture is found in people"s ideas. Culture is thinking, not doing: pre-eminence of belief over ritual. Ideas about reality are more important than rituals: culture = a text. Mean that culture is like a text in that it can be read and interpreted: can be interpreted to reveal the cognitive forms which shape and determine it. Sir edward burnett tylor: founder of modern social anthropology, author of the first textbook of anthropology in 1881, help the first academic position as an anthropologist, humans as a species, are the same no matter where you go. We look different but we are all the same: the core of difference is that we all have different cultures, not inherent biological differences, there are a number of external factors that shape cultures.
