First contact: initial encounters between people of different societies. Anthropologists" goals: understand uniqueness and diversity of human beh. and human societies, discover fundamental similarities that link all humans in past and present. Anthropology: the systematic study of humankind, both in past and present. Derived from greek words anthropo means humankind and logia means. Stands out from other fields b/c it combines 4 subfields/subdisciplines that connect natural sciences + social sciences + humanities (physical, archaeology, linguistic, and cultural/ethnology: subfields first emerged in western society as attempt to understand non- Human culture: learned beh and beliefs that shape our human experiences. Religion, spirituality, identities (gender, race, ethnicity, nationalism), food prefrences, etc. We tend to think many of our beh. + identities as natural/biological but many are not. Challenges to this approach: what if dealing with mass murder: physical anthropology: studies all aspects of the biology and beh of human species (and our closest relatives), past and present.
