The study of human health and disease, health care systems and biocultural adaptation. Ethnomedicine cross-cultural study of health and health systems. All cultures have a health system: perceptions and beliefs about the body, classifications of health problems, prevention measures, healing/healers. Illness perceptions and experiences of a health problem. Disease - biological health problem; universal (ex. measles) Explanatory models for why we get sick are products of culture. Based on balance of the humours: 4 humours. Channel system: blockage or misdirection of blood, air, feces and water in the body causes disease. Most sick people excess heat and moisture (fever, sweating, cough) Important aspect of latin- american folk medical practice. Treatment = kill microorganism -> eliminate disease (cid:494)repair(cid:495) body (cid:494)soul loss(cid:495) separation of soul and body. Symptoms anxiety, insomnia, fever, diarrhea, depression . Spain and portugal, central and south america. Linked to concern with appearance and body weight.
