26/09/17 - lecture #5: magic, witchcraft and sorcery: magic + religions, magic - supernatural techniques to accomplish specific aims, can happen alongside/outside of or apart of religion. In western society, we often view magic as inherently evil, but in groups that practise it, it is inherently good or evil. Voodoo dolls: contagious magic - personal objects are imbued with essence of a person, and so are used in rituals to affect them. Incorporates aspects of both animism and animatism: many religions developed out of shamanism. It (cid:272)a(cid:374) also f(cid:396)e(cid:395)ue(cid:374)tly (cid:271)e a(cid:374) u(cid:374)(cid:272)o(cid:374)s(cid:272)ious a(cid:272)ti(cid:448)ity, (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h (cid:373)ea(cid:374)s that the (cid:862)(cid:449)it(cid:272)h(cid:863) ofte(cid:374) does not know that he/she is bewitching anyone: can be using magic just by presence in an area, witchcraft can thus be passive.
