Document Summary

Most societies have an interest in the past. Reconstruct and explain lifeways in the past form material evidence (=archaeology) Usually no written documents or oral histories. Evidence comes from artifacts recovered from sites . See case study on jamestown in text. Settlement sites- find everyday life things like tools. Midden site- garbage of a past society. Cave site- common in europe and the middle east. Once a site is dug, it is destroyed. Process of digging is slow and careful because you do not want to destroy evidence. Sites are sometimes only dug halfway through and the other half is left for people later on in life.
