Language and communication - language is a system for communication using symbols of information. Humans use open systems of communications, all other species use closed systems. Closed systems have some limits of what you can communicate as opposed to open systems. Displacement - the ability to communicate or to talk about different times/places. argued that this is one of the fundamental keys for understanding human culture/evolution. Dialects: we all speak dialects. what is termed a dialect has to do with race wealth etc. they are social and political judgments and statements. Sapir wharf - two anthropological linguists, looking at language and thought. Sociolinguistics - the study of language in its social context. Looks at the way we construct language and use language in specific social contexts. Kinesics? (body language) -how we communicate through body language.
