ANTHROP 1AA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Comfort Food, Social Stigma, Marvin Harris
Document Summary
Anthro 1aa3: food sex and death- lecture 15: cultural meanings of food and consumption. When we talk about food we often lump eating and food together. But the two have different meanings which become important when we start thinking about the different ways that we can interact with food. Food is any substance that is taken into the body that provides nourishment for growth. What and how we eat can become and expression of our ideas and beliefs. While the need to consume nutrients is universal, we do not all need to eat the same thing or the same way in order to get those nutrients. We can modify the types of foods we eat, the way we prepare them, how we serve them and how we consume them. This means that food comes to have different meanings depending on how a particular social group uses that food.
