People tend to classify foods in diferent ways ,according to their culture. Example: hot and cold classiicaion of foods in puerto rico. Originally from greek theory of health (4 humors) Basic idea in greek, indian, chinese and arabic medical systems. Food restricions: periodic denial of certain foods (e. g. , pregnant women) Food taboo deined: the deliberate avoidance of a food item for reasons other then simple dislike from food preferences (meyer-rochow, 2009, p. 2) How do we explain food taboos: a marker of a group; a way of separaing your group from others (idenity, protecion against diseases, ecological theories (e. g. , marvin harris) (see p. 146) Marvin harris (1978) india"s sacred cow: it is probable that the eliminaion of meat eaing came about in a slow, pracical manner. The farmers who decided not to eat their cows, who saved them for procreaion to produce oxen, were the ones who survived the natural disasters.
