What do we mean by sex: sex, biological differences between males and females, xx = females, xy = males, rare exceptions, xxy, xxx, etc. Sex characteristics: primary sex characteristics - reproductive organs (ovaries, testes, secondary sex characteristics - physical differences not directly related to reproduction, e. g. , - male facial hair, female breasts, etc . What do we mean by gender: gender - social role(s) in society; learned, cultural category, dynamic, variable, 2 sexes 2 genders, many societies have 3rd genders. Examples of gender markers: clothes, colours, hairstyles, activities, earrings/jewelry, body language, occupation, behaviour. Gender identity: how people internalize attitudes and expectations, transgender - persons whose gender identity, gender expression, or behaviour does not conform to their sex assigned at birth. Categories of transgender: transexual, gender-queer, androgyne, gender non-conforming, intersexed, multi-gendered, third gender, two-spirit. Third gender: e. g. , sworn virgins of albania. 4: separates social being from the biological body, represents an intermediate status that is neither male nor female.
