Salient topic because just because many western cultures see themselves as being multicultural and diverse. There is a rise of conflict throughout the world today. Violence emerges when a sense of order in society is perceived to be under threat. Refers to the varied ways in which societies maintain a conflict-free, status quo. Different societies will have different ways of maintaining order. Bands and tribes (small-scale societies) versus states (large scale societies) Different forces or events that lead to disorder in society. Ex. external forces: colonialism (effects and after effects) Rowundan genocide (within a three month period upwards of a million people were killed- due to the after-effect of belgian colonialism) Two different groups were divided and broken into different ethnic groups, giving privileges to a certain group- began long-term conflict between those two ethnic groups. The larger the population, the more difficult it is to monitor people and impose order.
